Thank you for your interest in being a supervisor for a Mastercard Foundation Scholarship applicant. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has a vision that education is a catalyst for social and economic change, the program focuses on developing leaders who are transformative, encouraging them to be active contributors in their communities. This scholarship aims to foster expertise among faculty members at the University of Gondar (UoG) for inclusion of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia and in Africa more broadly by strengthening the quality of education and local experience. During their doctoral studies at Queen’s, scholarship recipients will be expected to complete a dissertation pertinent to disability inclusion in Ethiopia (or African more broadly); participate as a member of a cohort of like-minded faculty members from UoG; identify and support changes to make the UoG more disability-inclusive; and engage with Mastercard Foundation scholars at the UoG. To enable the UoG faculty member to collaborate with Mastercard Foundation Scholars in Ethiopia, complete applied dissertation research in Ethiopia, maintain family connections in Ethiopia, and actively engage in the UoG community, a condition of this scholarship is that Fellows must spend two of their four years of the PhD program in residence in Ethiopia. During the two years in Ethiopia Fellows will complete their research data collection, research write up and mentor Part A Scholars in their development of research skills and Fellows will participate in a rehabilitation/inclusive education focused Seminar Series. They will not have any other teaching or faculty-related responsibilities during their 2-year residency in Ethiopia. Fellows sign a contract with their employer to allow for a study leave from the institution. This contract requires that Fellows return to UoG to provide two years of service for every one year of scholarship funding.
All Mastercard Foundation Fellows come with a generous funding package, which will provide tuition costs for four years, a generous living allowance, funds for installation and winter clothing, travel costs, a computer, and up to $5000 USD for dissertation research. There is absolutely no financial obligation from the student’s supervisor or department to support this student.
Mastercard Foundation Fellows generally arrive in Canada in April or May before the commencement of their first academic year to participate in intensive English for academic purposes training and orientation with the Queen’s School of English.
If you are interested to recruit a funded Mastercard Foundation Fellow for the Fall 2021 School year, please complete this form and return it to the Student Faculty Liaison email@example.com no later than July 31, 2020.
